The modules work well for the most part, the application introductions and tutorials are as inviting and informative as ever, and it’s nice to be able to easily delve into the component-level components of your operating system. The question is not whether MacPaw, the makers of CleanMyMac X, have backed themselves into a corner, but whether CleanMyMac X can deliver on everything it sets out to do.

It’s cases like this that make one frown and wonder what else can be missed.

After infecting my Mac with a fair amount of questionable software (including an infamous keystroke logger disguised as an Adobe Flash Player update), the Malware Removal module was able to diagnose and remove most of my malware, but keep the infamous MacKeeper in place, which then had to be ripped through the roots again by a free copy of Malwarebytes.

I’ve had much better luck with CoreCode’s MacUpdater, which can be purchased for $14.95 for a single-user license and has been able to find just about every update imaginable for my Mac’s applications, given its single-minded focus on this task and the robust updates on the way.Īgain, the malware removal module has gotten better, but it’s not where it could be. Again, the Updater module found updates to the handy MacTracker utility and the GraphicConverter editor, but was missing an update for Google Chrome, which was somewhat disturbing. My previous version of this review noted that the Updater module had missed important updates to Zoom and Mozilla’s Firefox browser, both of which became vital for users during the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown. While well intended and targeted as marketing and selling points, the Updater feature only seems to find a few available application updates, and it’s almost anyone’s guess as to what it will see and what will be covered up. Unfortunately, CleanMyMac X has some modules that are the biggest hurdles of the app.

There are some nice links made to CleanMyMac X’s Space Lens feature, and it’s easy to see what’s eating up the most space on your Mac’s hard drive. This has been given a substantial update in the new version, and additional information such as your laptop’s battery, temperature and health, your hard drive capacity and overall health, your free RAM capacity, and your CPU load and hardware temperature have been updated. The modules are Smart Scan, System Junk, Mail Attachments, Trash Bins, Malware Removal, Privacy, Optimization, Maintenance, Uninstaller, Updater, Extensions, Space Lens, Large & Old Files and Shredder.Īs with previous versions, a handy menu bar item provides useful information such as disk capacities, CPU speeds, system temperature, system load, and network activity readouts.

The comprehensive utility offers an assortment of modules with a core focus on identifying and cleaning up gigabytes upon gigabytes of unused system waste. CleanMyMac X, while routinely updated (now version 4.11.0) and well taken care of by its developer, MacPaw, still seems to be in danger of falling into the latter category.
